Adrian Wong The Procedure
Making a painting is procedure, writing a poem is procedure, composing the 13th issue of Currents was the procedure of procedures. The Procedure is complete. We present it to you here, typed, composed, sequenced, [input past-tense verb here], printed.
What is the work of our lived procedures, the objects we procedurally use, how do they interact with [plural noun]? What are the implicit rules? What are the steps to make something into something else, unrecognizable?
Peter Patapis’s [noun] of poems “Life,” “Touch,” and “What,” creates three abstractions that don’t quite fill their titles, straining the procedure of naming. Formal constraints become [adjective] procedures: Conor Hultman’s translation “Valerie is still angry with Devon” sprawls across an eight-page grid, Marta Núñez Pouzols’s “Verbatim II” and Ulyses Razo’s “[“you’re thinking”]” piece together bits of overheard conversation. Esther Kondo Heller’s “Composition” procedurally [verb] the arc of a line, and Talia Tepper’s “*Uplift.cpp” outputs the procedures of a value-based life.
Multi-step tutorials [verb] across spreads while final [plural noun] are sometimes all that remains of an intricate procedure. In making an iced coffee Molly Soda wordlessly teaches us how to make a [adjective] and Tristan Lajarrige’s Rare Animal Piece instructs us to trick fellow hikers. The only remnant of Mai Phạm’s chopped salad is the canvas it was chopped on while Mira Dayal’s process of making Chalk Rubbing of String Drawing of Steel Sculpture of The Circle, II produces two sister prints, alike but [adverb] different.
How can procedure enable [adjective] generation? Can it be too enabling? Zoë Hitzig, featured in an interview with Lili Newberry, warns about “the nightmare of the procedure”—how algorithmic systems optimize outside of public understanding.
